Lalibela is built around a mountainous medieval kingdom. Most notably it is the home of one of Africa’s most incredible architectural antiquities. By the order of 12th century King Lalibela, 13-rock hewn churches were literally dug into the bedrock all interlinked with secret passageways for monks and kings to pass through. They range in complexity but all the works of this “New Jerusalem” are breath-takingly impressive and still very much alive with the sounds and smells of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
