The African Camelot, Gondar is a medieval city and former capital of Ethiopia. It is the focal points of Ethiopia’s colourful Timket celebrations in January, and due to its location in the foothills of the Simien Mountains, it also serves as your starting point for any trips into Ethiopia’s highest mountain range. The jewel in Gondar’s crown (excuse the pun!) is it’s royal circle of castles built by a succession of Kings between 1635 and 1855. In juxtaposition to this ancient royal court, architectural traces of the brief Fascist Italian occupation can be found across the city.
